Podcasting has only really been around for just a couple of years so it is no great shame to be unfamiliar with the phrase and what it means. However, Podcasting and Podcasts are gaining momentum and popularity, so now is the time to learn all you can about this great information innovation.

Podcasts, from which the term Podcasting is derived, are a form of media that can be found online. Podcasts can be either video or audio, though the current trend leans toward audio. In essence, Podcasts work much the same way as radio and television. Think of a Podcast as a show, either radio or television, and your computer as a receiver. You are able to access different Podcasts with the computer at your leisure. Now, Podcasts is used to refer to the actual ‘show’ or the media form overall. Podcasting often means the act of making a Podcast.


Anyone is able to make a Podcast, or to become a Podcaster. And anyone is able to listen to a Podcast as long as they have the ability to access them through the internet and a set of speakers. Podcasts can be transferred to MP3 players as well. This is, in fact, where Podcasts get their name; they are Portable On Demand.

Podcasting is a great way to share views and information and can be used for countless reasons, whether it’s educational or entertainment. Podcasts are loved for the ability to give anyone a voice where opinions and ideas are freely shared and distributed. Over time, Podcasts grew into new areas such as business, where their potential as a commercial tool is being explored for the first time. However, the essence of Podcasting remains the same; a way to share ideas through digital media.
