Podcasts are a great way to take information and entertainment content with you wherever you go with the use of MP3 players, or you can listen to that content on your personal computer at any time you wish. The freedom of Podcasts for both the creators and listeners make it truly unique and much more desirable than traditional blogs and websites.

Generally speaking, the software required to listen to Podcasts is already on most newer models of computers. As long as you are able to play sound or video, you will be able to listen or watch Podcasts. Many websites host Podcasts, so that you do not even need to download or subscribe to listen.

If you do want to subscribe to a Podcast, the software you will need is an RSS Feed reader. Most computers have this capability already. You’ll also need something to play the Podcasts, like iTunes or Windows Media Player. By subscribing to Podcasts, new content will be downloaded every time it is available, which may be more convenient.

To make a Podcast, you will need a sound editor like Garageband on Mac, or Audacity on Windows. There are many freeware and shareware programs available for use.. Of course, there are many Podcasters who record their podcasts without the use of sound editing software. While this is possible, you will need additional software if you want to add background music or to clean up the audio for the files. You will also need a program to convert those audio files into MP3 format as this format is the standard accepted format for all Podcasts.

In addition to these software requirements, making a podcast also demands that you have a microphone. Some computers have microphones built in, but you can generally get a much higher quality model, capable of recording much better audio, for just $20 or so. It’s well worth the investment if you intend to get serious about the world of podcasting.

Podcasting requires little in the way of software, and what software is required tends to be either inexpensive or free. This is one reason for the medium’s explosive popularity: it’s easy for virtually anyone to get involved.
